Becario – Knowledge & Information en Madrid

The Knowledge & Information Department of the firm's Spanish offices is looking for an intern (becario) to complete a temporary six month work placement with it starting in February 2013. The placement, based in Madrid, involves assisting the Knowledge & Information team in providing first level advice and support to members of our Spanish offices as a documentalista.


Requisitos

The role involves the following key responsibilities:

  • Providing first-level assistance in relation to enquiries received from staff (principally lawyers) from both the Spanish and other offices of the Firm.
  • Carrying out basic research involving the review of legislation, caselaw, bibliographies, press information, economic and statistical data etc. and preparing draft notes or memoranda, as required, in a clear and informative manner for review by their supervisor.
  • Becoming familiar with the structure and relevance of the principal sources of both national and EU legislation.
  • Learning and becoming proficient in the use of third party databases contracted by the Knowledge & Information Department for the Spanish offices.
  • Organising and systematising documentation and information relevant to both lawyers and the firm in general.
  • Maintaining and updating electronic information resources (principally the library publications catalogue of the Spanish offices' libraries and other third party databases used in the Knowledge & Information Department).
  • Receiving, cataloguing and periodically distributing legal journals and monographic material to specific individuals.
  • Assisting with the preparation of content for periodical updates distributed by the Knowledge & Information Department in relation to the Spanish offices' libraries and their resources in the form of newsletters, bulletins and other publications.
  • Monitoring the lending of information resources in hard copy format (principally books, legal journals and periodicals).
  • Assisting with, and monitoring the progress of, search requisitions filed by the Knowledge & Information Department with public Property and Corporate Registries throughout Spain on behalf of the firm's clients.
  • Reviewing press and other real time information sources on a daily basis and, under supervision, selecting material relevant to the legal world and existing or potential clients of the Firm for inclusion in the daily press summary published on the Knowledge and Information pages of the Firm's intranet.
  • Inputting changes and updates to information published on the Knowledge & Information pages of the Firm's intranet as instructed.
  • Participating in Knowledge and Information systems improvement projects as required.
  • Generally contributing to the maintenance of the order and image of the Spanish offices' libraries in the areas of documentary resources, applications and tools.

Skills and Qualifications & Experience

The successful applicant will:

  • Hold a Spanish law degree or a qualification as a documentalista and have acquired sufficient training and knowledge to be able to understand and deal with the processing of Spanish legal information, the classification of legal and other materials, and the provision of first level assistance and support to internal clients, principally lawyers.
  • Be totally fluent in written and spoken Spanish and have a sufficient level of written and spoken English to enable them to operate successfully in an international law firm and communicate with other offices.
  • Have advanced IT skills, including familiarity with all the computer programmes in MS used by Clifford Chance.
  • Be committed to learning to locate, retrieve and process legal and other information resources of the firm in a speedy and efficient manner.
  • Have excellent self-organisation skills and be capable of working in a responsible, expeditious and flexible manner, prioritising tasks appropriately and reporting back to the Knowledge & Information Manager or Information Officers, as appropriate.
  • Have good interpersonal and communication skills, with a client-focused and collaborative approach to dealing with problems, internal clients and other team members.

It would be an advantage, but is not essential, for the applicant to have been trained, and be proficient, in the use of some of the most relevant legal information databases (i.e., Aranzadi/Westlaw, Nexus, Nautis, Eurlex and BOE).

The internship of the successful applicant will need to be covered by a training agreement (Convenio de Colaboración Formativa) entered into between the applicant's university, or alternative educational establishment, and Clifford Chance, and be capable of lasting up to 6 months.
